The Ultimate Sorority Recruitment Bag Checklist

If there's one thing I recommend every PNM does before recruitment starts, it's this: pack your rush bag ahead of time.

It might not seem like a big deal now, but after spending hours walking across campus, standing outside houses in the August heat, and talking nonstop all day, you'll be so thankful you have everything you need in one place.

The goal isn't to carry around your entire bathroom cabinet. It's simply to pack a few essentials that help you stay comfortable, confident, and prepared so you can focus on what really matters—making genuine connections.

Whether you're getting ready for recruitment yourself or you're a mom helping your daughter prepare, here's exactly what I recommend packing in your rush bag.

Start With a Roomy Tote

Your rush bag will be with you all day, so choose one that's comfortable to carry and big enough to fit your essentials without turning into a black hole. Look for a tote with sturdy straps and a few interior pockets to keep everything organized. Trust me, you'll appreciate knowing exactly where your lip gloss, phone charger, or blotting sheets are when you're trying to freshen up between rounds.

Don't overthink whether it matches your recruitment outfits. Most campuses have designated places for PNMs to leave their bags before entering each house, so comfort and functionality are much more important than fashion.

Bring a Reusable Water Bottle

Recruitment days are long, and staying hydrated makes a bigger difference than most PNMs expect.

You'll be walking, talking, and spending plenty of time outside between houses, so having a water bottle with you all day is one of the easiest ways to feel your best. If you like electrolyte packets, throw a few in your bag too.

Don't Forget a Portable Phone Charger

Your phone is basically your recruitment assistant.

You'll use it for your schedule, maps, texting your Pi Chi, checking in with your parents, and entering your rankings after each round. The last thing you want is for your battery to die halfway through the day. A portable charger is one of those things you'll be so glad you packed.

Stay Cool Between Parties

Let's be honest... Recruitment is hot.

A small handheld fan makes waiting outside houses and walking across campus so much more comfortable. It might seem unnecessary now, but after your first day, you'll understand why so many PNMs swear by them.

Freshen Up Without Starting Over

Instead of carrying a full makeup bag, pack just a few touch-up essentials in a small cosmetic pouch.

I recommend bringing:

  • Lip gloss or lipstick

  • Blotting sheets

  • Compact powder

  • Concealer

  • A makeup sponge

  • Hair ties, claw clips, bobby pins, and a small brush

Blotting sheets are especially helpful because they remove shine without adding layers of makeup throughout the day.

Be Prepared for Anything

There are a few other little things that don't take up much space but can make a big difference during recruitment. I always recommend packing a compact umbrella if rain is in the forecast, sunscreen for long walks between houses, and a few tissues or wipes for quick cleanups throughout the day.

The goal isn't to pack everything you own—it's to be prepared without weighing yourself down.

A Few Rush Bag Tips

  • Pack your bag the night before each day of recruitment.

  • Recharge your portable charger and fan every evening.

  • Refill your water bottle before you head out.

  • Keep everything organized in small pouches so you can find what you need quickly.

One Last Thing...

The "perfect" rush bag won't get you a bid—but it will help you feel comfortable, confident, and prepared so you can focus on what really matters: making genuine connections and finding the chapter that feels like home.

A little preparation goes a long way, and your future recruitment-week self will definitely thank you.

Recruitment is busy enough; packing your rush bag shouldn't be.

I rounded up my favorite rush week essentials that I recommend to every PNM, all in one place.
